about

" A strange morning I woke up from bed anxious, the room was dark and there were no windows to see the outside; however, he knew perfectly that the vast town spread from any point of the building, getting lost in the thick and dark fog of every day…the room was absolutely in silence, although, omnipresent, I could feel the movement of the town under my feet.

I had completely lost the notion of time and I decided to go out to the street. I did not manage to determine whether it was night or day…it was not important, actually. The sky was grey and the usual thin rain was constantly splashing on my old hat. I often enjoyed walking and getting lost amongst the buildings…I always found the way back. That day I walked as though there was no turn back.

After going over the streets for hours, I looked up and, in front of me, I saw an old factory, rusted by the passing of time, with dirty windows and the roof vaulted, supported by a huge structure with big rusted iron archs which reached the upper cupola. I quickly realized that I had never been in that place before, and, to my sincere sorry, it was very unlikely that I came back there. A luminous sign placed in the inside gallery of the building was identifying a kind of shop loaded with old gadgets; second-hand obsolete technology and other useless devices. I had nothing better to do and I decided to come in…undoubtlessly, something fascinated me. It was dark and gloomy, and every corner was flooded by dust. Next to the filthy glass shop window there was the shop assistant, examining with absolute concentration an old tape through an adaptable microscope. He did not tell me anything and I continued.

As a child, I remember hearing something about the cassettes. Magnetic supports to store sounds…I was sure that I kept one of these players in my old flat, probably one of my father’s inheritances. On one of the shelves, full of broken tape recorders, old books and supports which were absolutely unknown to me, I came across one of these cassettes which, fortunately, I was able to identify. It was full of dust but it seemed to be well conserved. As a general rule, I would never set my eyes on such an old-fashioned thing, but a little detail really attracted my attention: that specific cassette had some words written on its cover: ‘THE NE-21’. It could not be so old, considering its typography, I thought, it seemed rather coetaneous; but I was unable to understand how they had been able to record something on this support, as doing it nowadays is completely impossible…or was I wrong? Something did not fit. I decided to take it home and find out exactly what it was about... "
